boil it in water and salt, huh? hmm...sounds like an adventure!

never seen it before but be glad it's not durian! they have durian in indonesia and just the smell is horrid. you know those signs at airports and museums and places like that which say stuff like "you can't bring guns or knives in here!" ? well in indonesia they add "durian" to those lists..."no guns, knives, or durian" 'cause it stinks so bad.

let us know how it is!

(i'm leaving it 2 weeks!)

Here's the scoop...
(There's a LOT of scoop on breadfruit.)
One website had this to say... "breadfruit is regarded merely as a food for the poor for use only in emergencies."
Another site had this helpful information...
"It was used In Hawaii more for its plant products including wood for buildings and canoes, fiber for cloth and latex as an adhesive for catching birds and caulking canoes."
I lost the site but one place said the way they fix it is to soak it in the sea for two hours and trample it.
Fae Hirayama in her "Breadfruit (or ulu) Cookbook" says this is her favorite recipe:
1 ripe ulu (skin will be yellow and brown, flesh soft)
¼ cup or ½ block butter
3 tablespoons brown sugar
Wash a ripe breadfruit and remove core by pulling stem. Trim top edge of ulu if needed. Fill cavity with butter and brown sugar. Cover ulu with foil and place in a baking pan with 1 cup water (to prevent scorching). Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
To serve, unwrap breadfruit and cut in half lengthwise. Bring to the table on a shallow bowl with a large spoon. Scoop ulu with a large spoon to serve, making sure each piece is topped with some of the sugar and butter in the center.
* For a richer variation, fill with one block of butter stuff cavity with brown sugar.
Anything with a block of butter and filled with brown sugar works for me!
Enjoy!

wow, thanks fam! well, i was thinking it might be the thing that we had at st joe's but now i guess not. remember that eggplant-like thing with the cheese? anyhow, i don't have a canoe to caulk, but brown sugar sounds better then salt. (this is where bren and i differ)

Good luck with that. Butter and sugar should cover up anything. My friend's dad used to tell me that when he wanted me to try grits. It never worked.

well...
shockingly it was horrible.
nicole laughed at me when she watched me try to eat it. i couldn't tell you what it tasted like. i did, however, try to explain to her about it being yellow when it's ripe and using sugar and butter. she laughed some more. (it should be noted that nicole literally laughs at everything!)
while i was trying to chew i was thinking of canoes being caulked . . .
well, thanks for your prayers!
elias, michelle? care to try? i can have one set aside for you!

come to think of it, I have a canoe that needs to be caulked. i'll bring it along.

or, you know, we could use it for adhesive and catch some birds and eat them. got any birds around there you want to try to catch?

sistre, you might want to keep some diluted latex around for those who frequent jacmel! ;)

Papa Cecil-
Your breadfruit recipe is very similar to the Coot (Mud Hen) recipe I have.... Tack the Coot to a piece of plywood. Saturate with wine, seasonings, salt, and pepper to taste. Bake at 350 for two hours. Throw away the Coot and eat the plywood!
Maybe YouYou could feast her guests on Breadfruit and Coot!?
Are there any Coots around there, YouYou?
